Gamedev | AI
Im a big Blender fan not because its a free software but because its a good 3d modelling software with nice toolset. But the question is - is it good enough to use for gamedev workflow. By that workflow I mean steps like:
1. creating high poly model
2. creating low poly model
3. sculpting high poly model
4. preapring uv-s for low poly model
5. baking normal maps
6. texturing
Creating hp and lp models
Its my personal opinion but I think there is 2 important things that you need to take into account when you are creating models. First is can you create nice looking models - in other words do you have enough tools for that inside software? Second is can you make it really fast. If you know shortcuts and tools inside Blender the answer is yes for all 2 questions. But I should mention one thing that looks promising for hardsurface modelers - creating hp model inside Plasticity then load it inside Blender with remesh and smooth modifiers ready for sculpting I mention that thing because in some cases that flow can save you some work hours.
Sculpting
Same 2 questions as in paragraph above - Quality/toolset and speed. Blender here also works well. My only dream is if it comes out with some specialized custom brushes(with alpahs) out of a box.
Preparing UV-s
What is needed here is quality of uv-islands, speed, aligning islands to rectangles, overlapps and packing. If you know the trick for - follow active quads then the biggest problem here is overlapps. I dont mean its not possible inside Blender but it is definitly not fast. The trick for follow active quads to make it work is to remember to align edges of active quad to horizontal and vertical respectivelly. If you do that it aligns perfectly islands to rectangles.
Baking normal maps
Here is my biggest dissapointment. Because Blender bakes normal maps but quality is still not comparable to for example Substance Painter baker. So if you want to bake normal maps for sake of you sanity dont use Blender.
Texturing
Blender has limited amount of texturing nodes but it has quite advaced texture painting tool (stylized textures). You can texture models inside Blender but Substance Painter is still faster solution for that.
